What is Kernel panic?

A Kernel panic is a error which is generated by the operating system due to some kind of malfunction. This term is mostly used in Unix based systems and also Mac OS. In Windows, it is referred as blue screen of death (BSOD).

BSOD
A kernel panic can be generated due to some hardware fault, such as HDD failure, data corruption, overheating, incorrect installation of hardware. It can also be triggered by a malware or incompatible drivers.

This error displays a set of message which states the cause of the panic screen. This message is difficult to understand for an inexperienced user.
